Penguin Films is currently in pre-production for a feature film called ‘Felix!’ – a coming-of-age story with a difference. This film, set in Cape Town, is about a brilliant young boy named Felix Xaba (14), a self-taught musician who dreams of becoming a saxophonist like his late father, Zweli, who once played in a great jazz band. His mother Lindiwe’s ambitions for Felix exclude jazz, ‘the devil’s music’, which she bans from her home because of Zweli’s history. Things change drastically for Felix and his world when he is offered a scholarship to an exclusive private school and has to leave the comfort of his home in ‘Gugs’ (Gugulethu).
This feature film will be directed by the head of Penguin Films, Roberta Durrant, who has recently been honoured at the South African Film and Television Awards 2012 with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to television production in South Africa. Durrant is responsible for several award winning and popular programmes which include Home Affairs, Sokhulu & Partners, Sgudi Snaysi, Going Up, Stokvel, Mazinyo Dot Q, and Madam & Eve, among others.
Penguin Films is seeking out the star of the movie differently in that they have put out an open casting call in search of a boy to play the leading role of Felix Xaba.
