Pocket Power sizzles at Cape Summer Turf Challenge
by Press Release
11 January 2010

Leader board dramatically changed after Saturday’s Challenge

P

ocket Power surged to the top of the point scorers in the Cape Charity Turf Challenge with a superb record-breaking fourth win in the Gr.1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, adding the competition maximum of 30 points to his 2 pointer earned when winning his prep race. On a glorious Cape summer’s day, 11 other horses earned points dramatically changing the Leader Board. Queen’s Plate second, Kapil, ran another cracker in defeat and joined the fray with 24 points. The Glen Kotzen dead-heaters for third place, Big City Life and Fabiani, earned 20 points apiece.

The other Gr.1 race of the day, the TBA Paddock Stakes, went the way of the well-backed Mother Russia (15) and she looks a lively contender for the J&B Met after defeating market rivals, Sparkling Gem (12) and River Jetez (10). Maureen De Lago (2); Comet Chaser (2); Celtic Cross (2); Kiss Again (2) and Irish Flame (5) were the other point scorers.

Earlier in the week former RA General Manager, Colin Gordon, rose to the top of the Leader Board after Fort Vogue (10) won the Gr.2 Peninsula Handicap in a hard fought win against Thundering Jet (7) and Noblewood (5).

Gordon’s reign at the top of the Leader Board was short-lived, however, as Paul Garlicki streaked ahead of the field and now leads with 185 points, 18 clear of his next best entry and 20 clear of Jeremy Chetty in third. Garlicki has just about every high scoring horse in the competition thus far but has no sprint contender in his top three selections when the next bonus race, the Betting World Gr.1 Cape Flying Championship is run in two weeks time.

Chetty, on the other hand, relies on Captain’s Secret, one of Mike Bass’ many entries for the big race and joint-fourth, Mark Aboud, has the prolific Port Elizabeth winning sprinter, Hear The Drums, to keep his hopes alive. Hear The Drums (2) made it onto the Leader Board when winning a Pinnacle Plate at Fairview last Friday and connections of the joint top-rated sprinter will be hoping that he brings his best form to Kenilworth.

The weekend’s spot prize winners were “The Brothers” and “Hotline” who won a R1000 betting voucher from Dean Finder Racing & Sports Betting and a case of wine from L’Ormarins respectively. The winners should contact Racing South Africa to claim their prizes: 031 314 1799
