Summer Charity Turf Challenge @ Cape's Kenilworth Race Course
by Press Release
05 January 2010

The first of the 3 bonus races will be run at Kenilworth Racecourse this weekend.

T

he Gr.1 L’Ormarins Queens Plate has attracted a small, but high class field with Pocket Power likely to start favourite in his bid to become the first horse to have won this famous race 4 times.

For the first time since the Charity Turf Challenge was launched by Racing South Africa, the second and third placed horses in the designated bonus races will also earn points, all point scorers earning double the points allocated to Gr.1 events. Popular Charity Turf Challenge selections Kapil, Big City Life and Ivory Trail could, therefore, keep their followers in touch with Pocket Power assuming the race unfolded according to the race ratings.

The TBA Paddock Stakes is the other featured Gr.1 race of the day and River Jetez will be aiming to maintain her unbeaten record this season. Mother Russia was another popular entry who won her prep race at Turffontein Racecourse in effortless style and the honest Sparkling Gem is also in with a shout if seeing out the 1800m. Cape Fillies Guineas wild card entry, Field Flower, represents the 3yr olds and hails from the red hot Stephen Page stable.

Wild Card entry, Curved Ball, earned 5 points when winning the Listed Sea Cottage Stakes on New Year’s Day at Turffontein. Then the consistent, Dance With Al, maintained her point scoring ways in the competition with a third place in the Gr.2 Sceptre Stakes run at Kenilworth Racecourse last Saturday. The Hassen Adam’s owned filly now is the leading point scorer with 20 points! Bush Pirate got onto the leader board when winning a Graduation Plate on the same day and earned 2 points for his followers.

“Meisie” and “The Beast” sneak into top spot on the Leader Board with 57 points apiece, both entrants benefitting from Dance With Al’s 5 pointer on Saturday.

The weekend’s spot prize winners were Dean Lang and “Alfred” who won a R1000 betting voucher from Sedley Barr Racing & Sports Betting and a case of wine from Avontuur Wine Estate respectively. The winners should contact Racing South Africa to claim their prizes: 031 314 1799
